Big unis are over-enrolling domestic students ahead of hard cap

Metropolitan universities including the University of Sydney have over-enrolled students in the last year before the Albanese government introduces stricter caps on domestic places.

The University of Sydney has had a 5 per cent increase in domestic undergraduate enrolments – and 25 per cent in law – from 2025 to 2026, despite universities being warned to prepare for stricter enforcement on their numbers.
