CGT discount ‘overtaxes’ investors during high inflation

The capital gains tax discount was not concessional during high inflation over the past five years, and paring it back – as the government is considering – would penalise property and shares investors by overtaxing them when inflation is elevated, new research shows.

The 50 per cent discount on capital gains tends to under-compensate investors when inflation erodes the real value of their gains, particularly for shorter-term investments of less than five years.
