China imposes beef quotas, now all eyes on Australia’s EU trade deal

China’s decision to restrict beef imports from Australia and other major suppliers to protect domestic producers will ramp up pressure on Labor to secure a strong free trade deal with the European Union after years of failed negotiations.

Discussions between the EU and Australia over free trade have dragged on for years and collapsed in October 2023 over Australia’s demands for greater market access for locally produced beef, sheep meat, dairy and sugar.
