‘Don’t panic’: Data centres claim their power needs are overstated

An industry group says the threat to the energy grid from power-hungry data centres has been overestimated by the inclusion of “phantom demand” for electricity connections that will never eventuate.

Data Centres Australia argues the sector’s growth is manageable and warned governments against “panicking” about a “pipeline [that] appears far larger on paper than is likely to materialise in practice”, in a submission to a NSW parliamentary inquiry.
