Government to help buy ‘shiploads of fuel’ under new powers

The federal government will create new powers to underwrite the purchase of imported fuel in an attempt to stave off major supply risks in coming weeks as the war in Iran continues to clog global supply chains.

The new powers, which will be introduced into parliament on Monday, will allow fuel companies to use public funds to bid for fuel and fertiliser cargoes that become available on the global spot market.
