Washington | President Donald Trump’s former top adviser on Iran says his old boss is likely to step up the military and economic pressure campaign on Tehran if nascent peace talks fail, while arguing the war helps deter China from acts of aggression in the Indo-Pacific.
Brian Hook, vice chairman at investment group Cerberus Capital Management and special representative to Iran in the first Trump administration, said the US president appeared to have the seizure of Kharg Island, the Islamic Republic’s key storage depot and port, “on his mind”. Trump also appeared to be holding the bombing of Iranian power plants as a bargaining chip in current peace talks, he said.
