Home batteries smash records, but households miss out on extra dollars

Households fuelling a boom in the installation of home batteries are mostly missing out on savings on their bills of more than $400 a year by declining to share the benefits of their storage system with the power grid.

As many home batteries were installed in the second half of 2025 as during the previous five years combined, according to the Clean Energy Council. The number rose fourfold from the same six months in 2024, supercharged by subsidies through the federal government’s Cheaper Home Battery scheme.
