Ignored warnings about fuel security have left Australia vulnerable

It’s not as though we haven’t been warned before – in 2012, politicians from both sides were calling for the nation to shore up its fuel supply.

Throughout his colourful and largely chaotic political career, Barnaby Joyce has had the odd moment of prescience.

Three standout examples spring to mind. The first was in December 2009 when, as shadow finance minister, Joyce was widely regarded as a lunatic for suggesting the increasingly profligate United States could default on its debt.
