Industry super’s Mean Girls club

Lobby groups governed by Labor heavyweights such as Wayne Swan, Nicola Roxon and James Merlino aren’t usually associated with bipartisanship.

If there’s one group that shouldn’t have an issue accessing the corridors of power, it’s the Super Members Council. Bankrolled by industry super funds, its directors include Cbus chair and Labor’s national president Wayne Swan, and former Labor frontbenchers-turned-super bigwigs Nicola Roxon, Nick Sherry and James Merlino.

Hostplus CEO David Elia, Aware Super CEO Deanne Stewart, AustralianSuper chair Don Russell (Paul Keating’s former right-hand man) and ACTU secretary Sally McManus are also all on the Council.
