The Albanese government is modelling changes to its generous home battery subsidy scheme that could have the $7 billion policy scaled back for the second time in six months as Labor casts a wide net in its search for ways to cut spending before the May budget.
The Cheaper Home Batteries program provides rebates of up to 30 per cent for households and businesses, and has already been modified once, in December 2025, after its immense popularity and policy design blew out the government’s original $2.3 billion cost estimate by more than $11 billion.
