‘Landmark moment’: Record renewables drive down cost of power

An abundance of solar and wind power sent wholesale electricity prices plunging in the last three months of 2025, nearly halving compared with a year earlier despite power demand breaking records for the December quarter.

Renewables, including surplus power stored in batteries, met more than half of demand in the National Electricity Market for the first time in the three-month period, according to the Australian Energy Market Operator.
