Tickets to The Lion King in Sydney next month will be about 35 per cent more expensive than during its last run, but the band under the stage will be 35 per cent smaller – a trend musicians say is shortchanging audiences and governments that subsidise big commercial musical productions.
The story of Simba and friends was soundtracked by 17 musicians the last time Disney Theatrical Group brought its biggest-grossing musical to Sydney’s Capitol Theatre in 2013. Next month, there will be just 11, with two trombonists and four string players missing from the line-up.
