Millions of Australians will pay significantly more for top-level health insurance because a mass exodus of people from gold-tier policies is forcing up prices at the same time premiums are rising to the highest level in almost a decade.
New data released on Thursday showed 383,000 people have abandoned their gold health cover in the last five years, confirming fears of a rapid spiral in the most expensive level of hospital cover.
