A “churn and burn” culture in the prime minister’s department has resulted in a quarter of public servants wanting to leave, amid complaints the team managing key cabinet processes lacks strategic direction and suffers high burnout rates, a review has found.
The review by the Australian Public Service Commission scored the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet as “developing” or “emerging” on 17 of 19 performance metrics, with a staff turnover rate more than double the average of other public service departments.
