Labor’s mid-year budget update included a record revision of government spending forecasts, which economists say calls into question the accuracy of the Treasurer Jim Chalmers’ budget papers and the quality of advice used by cabinet ministers to shape policy.
The December 2025 mid-year review included an unprecedented $47.8 billion in revisions as public servants upgraded the amount the government is expected to spend on the uptake of social support programs, such as home battery subsidies, as well as the impact of the student debt relief scheme.
