There was a time not that long ago when Netflix’s top executives would shut down questions about the streaming service’s interest in live sports.

The streaming giant’s co-founder and chairman Reed Hastings and chief executive Ted Sarandos were the most vocal, repeatedly stating that live content was ill-suited to their growth strategy.
