Telcos to pay billions more for spectrum after backlash

Australia’s three big mobile phone operators will have to pay billions of dollars more to use the radio waves that transmit mobile phone calls after their regulator increased the price it plans to charge them.

The cost of telecommunications companies’ licences for spectrum – the frequencies used by wireless services – has been questioned by politicians after Optus’ fatal Triple Zero outage in September sparked broader scrutiny of the sector.
