The war on hate must be fought online

Whether it’s a Labor or Coalition bills that become law – or a combination of the two – it doesn’t change the fact our politicians are fighting a 21st century problem with a 20th century solution.

When Opposition Leader Sussan Ley convened a meeting of her leadership group late on Wednesday to express reservations about Labor’s proposed new hate speech laws, she did not have to do much in the way of convincing her colleagues.

The modern Liberal Party is steeped in a free speech tradition – prominent MPs such as James Paterson and Tim Wilson built political careers on being champions of it.
