Before George W. Bush went barnstorming into Iraq 23 years ago this month, his secretary of state Colin Powell, one of only two members of the administration to have actually experienced war, counselled the president.
Powell, with his deputy and Vietnam veteran Richard Armitage, had serious misgivings. He reminded Bush of the “Pottery Barn rule”, a reference to the policy of the US domestic homewares retailer that warned customers: “You break it, you own it.”
