That’s all for tonight

Thank you for reading our live coverage of the US-Iran war. We’re wrapping up tonight but will be back soon to continue the coverage in our Need to Know blog.

Here’s what we know so far:

  • US President Donald Trump has reportedly told G7 leaders that Iran is “about to surrender” but there has been no evidence to back up his claims.
  • The US says Iran’s new leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has been injured and likely disfigured. Khamenei made his first public statement on Thursday but did not appear on camera and a news presenter read the statement on his behalf. He has not been seen in public since the beginning of the war.
  • Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth says the US will unleash the highest number of airstrikes on Iran since the war began.
  • Hegseth also said that all of Iran’s defence companies will be destroyed and the US would not allow Iran to contest shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Four US crew members have been killed after a tanker plane crashed during a refuelling mission.
  • Khamenei said the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed and that Iran’s attacks on Gulf Arab neighbours would continue.
  • Israeli airstrikes hit two buildings in the heart of Beirut near the Lebanese government’s headquarters.
