US private equity buys JERA stakes in Gorgon, Ichthys LNG

Japanese LNG giant JERA, the world’s largest importer of the super-chilled gas, is exiting two of Australia’s biggest LNG projects in a deal that will result in private equity player MidOcean further increasing its presence in the critical energy sector.

JERA, owned by Chubu Electric and Tokyo Electric Power, agreed to sell its small stakes in Chevron’s Gorgon LNG project in Western Australia and Inpex’s Ichthys venture in Darwin to MidOcean. The buyer is managed by US private equity player EIG and is partly owned by Saudi Aramco.
