‘We hate surprises’: Japan warns against new gas tax

Japan’s ambassador to Australia has warned any imposition of a windfall tax on LNG exports would be regarded by Tokyo as a “bad surprise” that would deter investment in the sector.

The usually softly spoken Kazuhiro Suzuki also played down the prospect of a two-way deal in which Australia would continue to guarantee LNG in return for a supply of oil, similar to the arrangement brokered this week with Singapore.
